Our members have changed dramatically. The previous members were not professionals. They were my school mates and they've all gone. And here we are now. Fruits Kim, Carrefour Hwang, Yumi. These guys are professional musicians. They also participate in other bands. They're absolutely fantastic. Our band is focused on my existence(Jo Carlos) and they deal with it well through improvisation. Sometimes, I can't even tag alone. Before, I was selfish to make a band with school friends. I've always been eager to the feeling of rock band. I kept asking them to come for rehearsals, telling them 'you do this, you do that'. It worked quite well. Of course, they cannot be compared to today's members. Latin? I'm not a fanatic of it. I've only chosen it because I'm not good at playing the guitar. In order to blent into it, you know. 'Ppingjjak' is of course similar style in terms of music. But I thought Latin would be better. These days though, the earlier concept of Latin is fading away from my band. It was just the early setting. Latin being a concept, I am fonder of happing on the stage. The moment when performers and audiences collide! That is the difference between live music and sound sources, which I can enjoy more too. Also the most important thing is always 'wit'. Personally, I regard myself of being not so witty. So I try to make people laugh more. Actually, music is repetition within a designed frame. Singing the same songs over and over. So we need to add wit on lyrics and performances. Korean pop music releases too many songs at a time and we're used to it. It would be better to have less but witty songs and that's what we want. There's amateurism within the wit. The reasin is half and half. Things that we can't do and things that we don't do. Bullabang Star Sausage Club cannot have a high quality. We can't pretend to be professionals. We can't do it anyway. To a certain degree, our music standard doesn't necessary to be high either. There are already people doing it so greatly. We don't need to. That's how I perceived Hongdae independent musical circles before. When there was the boom in the 90s, I had certain fantasies. Things like, 'there are so many unique bands! There are so diverse genres and stages!'. People like 'lbalshow Prono', 'Hwang ShinHae Band', and 'Amateur amplifier' were so marvelous. I got some inspirations from them. I was also a member of Hwang ShinHae Band's fan club. In around 2003, I was in Hongdae, the place I'd never been before. I had no courage to be there. Then, I realised all the special bands were the ones that I had already known, and that was all. No other special ones. What a disappointment! There were only few unique bands. So I made it. Bullabang Star Sausage Club. However, it's not just macho. Macho of the weakest. It used to mean something very masculing before, but now the definition of it has been transformed towards the social weak. The word itself feels like some criminal. A less educated person with basic instincts. Socially the weakest. Now, however, the genuine machos are not those kinds of people but those in power with money. And they label the weak people of being machos. We don't pursuit social critics or changes though. Just want to have some gossips on it. Having back talks on them. 'Alligators' is that sort of song. The song, 'Unfortunately, Life goes on'has a very strong macho nature. I once did a part time job and didn't get paid for it. I was really pissed off. But what could I do? I exaggerated that kind of experience theatrically. The hardcore melodrama! I don't want the melodramas of Korean TV sopas but intend to have more like mild tone melodramas. I saw Japanese film 'Nobady knows'. The synopsis was a real melodrama. There are children abandoned by parents starving to death. But, the main protagonist doesn't shed a single drop of tear till the end. Such a mild melodrama. If it was made in Korea, then everyone must've been crying all the way. Money? The easiest way of earning money is not to spend it. I don't smoke and drink. It can be a way of earning money. My body can't take it either. I have a fulltime job as a painting artist. Music is a bit like a hobby. If I am obliged to compare, while music can be more instant and give me presence of the stage, painting art works lack explantion. So they allow you to think more. They have the same emotional origin but have different ways. Fine art for me is like the work of my lifetime but music can be utilised just when I want to. They can be collided. It can be either advantages or disadvantages for me to do both of them at a time. If I do it both, then it can regarded as synergy in the music field but can be a minus factor in the fine art field. Because fine art is what I am doing as a major and will professionally be continued. |
